You, Me, & “The Celebration”

We are truly humbled
        After seven wonderful years
That expands at the corner to include many, many corners
To the far reaches of Metro and beyond
          Amid the Indiana limestone,
Among your joyful faces and a thousand memories
          You paused to celebrate
To say thank-you in a big way
          for the past seven years.
We are far from perfect. There is much work to be done
          The journey has hardly started,
But you paused to say thank you in too big a-way
          We are warmed, speechless,
Blown away by so many expressions, but inspired to carry on and on…
Thank you to everyone who made our day so special!

Thanks to Gwen Winston for her “7 Year Idea,” and all the work she did to make it happen.

Thank you to Lay Leaders, Al Acker and Mark Bendure, to the Celebration Committee, for all those who helped with the reception, for the poetry and the music, for all the special words and gifts, for the Resolutions from City Council, Wayne County Commission, and the US House of Representatives.

Also thank you to William Sinkford, President of the UUA, for his understanding letter of appreciation.

Our Community - A special thanks to Cindy Hill, Jan Thompson, and Linda Darga who pursued a distress signal for Helga Herz. Helga didn’t show up at the church for Thanksgiving dinner so they went to her apartment, got the manager to let them in and found Helga on the floor unable to get up after a fall earlier in the week. Helga is recovering now in Receiving Hospital and wanted so much to come to our celebration. This is what makes First Church so great - members and friends going the second mile, truly caring for one another with love and commitment, walking our talk.

Thank-you Cindy, Jan, and Linda for this “Spirit of Life” and for extending it.

Also, thank you to Lee Thume for the beautiful song she wrote for us, which was arranged by Todd Ballou and sung so beautifully by Celeste Headlee and Lyle Brown. Lee was unable to attend the celebration because of hospitalization at Bottsford. She will be undergoing surgery this morning.

Our Move - Some of you have heard that our beautiful house on Kirby is for sale, yes this is true, a wonderful couple has made a bid and it is in process! We are moving, but we are not leaving! As the fresh snow falls this morning, we are buoyed with fresh enthusiasm for many tomorrows among you.

With love, gratitude and warm wishes for the Holiday Season,
          Peace,
          Larry and Nancy

Development Committee

Entertainment Books will be for sale until December 15 at a cost of $30.00 each with $6.00 going to the church treasury. This weekend I saved $5.00 with the Kroger coupon. When you buy $50.00 worth of groceries, you get a $5.00 gift card to spend on your next visit. I also saved $15.00 on a ticket to see “Philadelphia Story” at the Hillberry Theater. On Saturday, my sister and I saved $5.00 each at the Edsel Ford Estate in Grosse Pointe Shores. It is a wonderful place to see during the holidays. We saw the house decorated for Christmas, along with the children’s playhouse, garage, heating plant and grounds. There is a tea room where lunch and snacks are sold from Tuesday - Saturday, 11:30 - 2:30. There is also a gift shop. What a great inexpensive place to take family and out of town guests!

If anyone is interested in caroling at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, located on the corner of Cadieux and Warren, please call Margaret Beck at 313-882-7775. We will be singing at 5:15 P.M., their dinner hour, on December 13th.

Thank you for contributing to our fundraisers over the year. Over $1400.00 has been turned over to our treasury to pay church expenses.
