Development Committee

I have 10 tickets, at $15.00 each, for the June 7, 3:00 P.M. performance of Cheat being performed at the Detroit Repertory Theater.  The plays are wonderful, fun and a fundraiser for the church.

If anyone would like to help clean the garage, sort, price and organize for the summer garage sales it will be very appreciated.  Please call Margaret Beck at 313-882-7775 to let her know when you are available, also, we need hangers, bags, tables and garment racks to display items.  Thanks for any help you might give.

First Unitarian Universalist Church has rooms of all sizes for rent. The spaces are excellent for community groups, private parties, etc. Rates are based on a sliding scale.  Please call the church office at 313-833-9107 if you, or someone you know, is interested.

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee

The March 30 UUSC service was successful in raising the level of awareness of the UUSC in our congregation and bringing contributions for this fiscal year up to almost $1200! With an additional contribution from a dedicated member, we are able to send the UUSC over $1200!!! This includes money raised at the service, Guest at Your Table contributions, and some made earlier that were not clearly designated.

So that future contributions will be submitted correctly and promptly, please route them via me and I will forward to the UUSC. That way they will know for sure what came from our church. If you send a contribution directly or donate at GA, that’s ok, but let me know. I have volunteered to be local rep for the coming year, with Barbara Stevenson’s advice and support. Thank you, Barbara.

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee recognizes commitment like ours in several ways. A contribution from the church budget in an amount greater than $1 per member represents the James Luther Adams level. For those who don’t know, James Luther Adams was a Unitarian minister, professor, and theologian who taught the prophethood of all believers. That means each of us is required to live out our beliefs in the best way we know how. How good to know we raised enough money to achieve this honor! And thanks, Joe Samples, for first bringing the work of James Luther Adams to light for me many years ago.

When the memberships have been tallied, I will report them. My goal is to become a Creating Justice Banner Society, which is an honor bestowed on congregations in which 25-49% of congregation members are members of UUSC. For us that means a minimum membership of about 45. To do that we need only increase 10% each year for a few years.

Materials on the activities of the UUSC are available by request. Ask me!!!   Cindy Hill

Women’s Festival

Hi, I’m a Canadian UU (UU Church of Olinda, Ruthven, Ontario).  I do many things with my church but I am also involved in other interfaith projects.  This women’s festival is one of them.  I am e-mailing UU congregations in Michigan to let the gals just across the border know about a fantastic event that is relatively nearby and very much worth a trip to Oh Canada.  Please see the flyer elsewhere in this Newsletter for more information and spread the word to other women you think may be interested in this type of event.  Thank you from the bottom of our budgetless hearts for helping to spread the word.  Bright Blessings, Karen

Ride the Bus to Boston

The First UU of Ann Arbor Senior High Youth Group is sponsoring a bus ride to the General Assembly in Boston this year.  We have been very successful in signing up our youth to go, so we thought to reduce costs for everyone we would charter a tour bus.  There are plenty of seats available and we would like to offer them to other area UU who are thinking of going, too.  This is a great opportunity for adults, youth, and adult sponsors to arrive in Boston safely and economically.  The cost is only $150.00!  The bus will leave Wednesday, June 25 at 9:00 P.M. and arrive in Boston Thursday morning.  Bus will depart Boston on Monday, June 30 at 10:00 P.M. arriving in Ann Arbor Tuesday morning.  Call Doug Harris at 734-944-9809 or Bob or Beth Hospadaruk at 734-994-3774 to reserve your spot.  Please see flyer elsewhere in this Newsletter.
