Pulpit Editorial – Our Heating System

Earl Harvey

We have been very fortunate in having Greg Moritz and Peter McAlpine of Moritz Brothers to devote their free time of about 80 hours to make sketches of how the system works and to give their expertise on the care of the heating system.

The Church Board has approved $2000.00 from the boiler fund to tear the boiler down to confirm that the boiler can be fixed or that it needs to be replaced.  Moritz Brothers is 90% sure that the boiler is unrepairable.

Moritz Brothers proposal consists of six items.  Item #1 is to replace the boiler, add a boiler makeup feed water system and install a proper air combustion system.  The existing boiler does not have an adequate air combustion system to provide efficient use of the gas and air mixture.  The cost of those items is $62,500.00.

Item #2 is to provide better air movement for Pullman Hall.  This will be accomplished by installing mixed air dampers, air filter racks and steam valves.  The cost for this is $15,100.00

Item #3 is replacing 12 Danfoss valves of various heating radiators to conserve energy.  Moritz Brothers cost is $5,100.00.  The cost of a Danfoss valve is approximately $50.00.  Art Gabhart has volunteered to install these valves which would cost $600.00

Item #4 is to complete automatic temperature control renovation on the air-handling unit in the church house.  The cost is $2850.00.

Item #5 is to provide and install two digital room thermostats for the second and third floor areas, served by the hot water heating system.  The cost is $760.00.

Thermostats should cost between $50.00 and $75.00 each and we think Building and Grounds can handle that.

Item #6 is to provide preliminary certified air balancing of the zones served by the two air handling systems.  The cost is $2970.00

The total cost of all the items to be installed by Moritz Brothers is $89,280.00.  If Building and Grounds were to do items #3 and #5; the cost would be approximately $84,170.00.  At the present moment we have received $37,115.00 in pledges.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain what is going on with our heating system and let us act and think positively.

To the First UU of Detroit Choir

Thank you for all the hard work and dedication you have shown this year, both the congregation and I are very grateful for your contributions.  I think we’ve had a very successful year musically and am looking forward to next year.  Rehearsals will begin the first Sunday after Labor Day and I’ll have a schedule for performances later this summer.  Keep watching the Newsletter for details.  Lyle

Kids are Always Asking Questions

Our UU children don’t wait until Sunday when they’re in their RE classes to wonder about their world!  All week long, they are questioning and pondering their ever-expanding universe – sometimes it’s hard to keep up, or be able to direct their curiosity in constructive ways.  Now you have an online resource to draw upon from The Church of the Larger Fellowship called “Between Sundays: Answering Kids’ Questions”

clfuu.org/betweensundays/

This easy-to-use website has lots of fun activities for kids ages 4-13 which will help them discover the answer to such questions as, “Can you believe anything you want to as a UU?” or “Why do we light a chalice?”  This online resource will help you extend your kids' knowledge of UUism, building upon what they are learning in church on Sundays.  Check out the site “Between Sundays” with your family.

1.      If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee

2.      The flea can jump 350 times its body length.  It’s like a human jumping the length of a football field.

SUMMER SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

We are pleased to announce that there will be children programing at the summer services. Sumarah Smith has come up with a curriculum she calls "Summer Storytelling Adventures". Each week we will read a story from around the world, and do a coordinating craft or activity. Nick Greene has offered to be the primary care giver this summer. We are looking for one other person to assist him each week. If you are interested for signing up for one of the eleven Sundays please notify Sumarah Smith.
*Also we are looking for donations of gently used arts and craft supplies. Especially crayons and markers. The nursery could also use new or gentle used infant toys. Thank You, Jennifer Teed & Sumarah Smith

First Friday Fun

Just wanted to let everyone now I had a great time at First Friday! The war stories were very informative, it was fun to get to know people better. Thanks to all those who worked so hard. I look forward to First Fridays next fall. I'd like to support some child programming, and am especially interested in starting some adult crafts- is anyone interested in having a jewelry / beading group?
Peace, Jennifer Teed
