Committee News

Development Committee

This summer we have raised over $1,700.00 from summer garage sales. Thanks to Faye Colling, Rose LaBolle, Mildred Robinson, Marisa Hernandas and Sheeleen Gage for helping.  Thanks, also, to the following people for their garage sale donations – Caroline Taylor, Ivan Cotman, Jay Marks, Sheeleen Gage, Carole and Mark Bendure, Arlene and Bob Teed, John O’Connor, Elena Takkla, my niece and her sister and brother-in-law Marci and Z Takkla who donated a treadmill and many other things.  Jean Slazier’s sister donated a vanload of items and Thanks to Colleen Dolan-Greene for delivering items.  Thanks also to my neighbors Chris and John Andrews for several boxes of choice items also thanks to Mildred’s cousin Thelma for two carloads of items.

            I hope you all are planning to buy an Entertainment Book from the church.  Delivery will be mid August.

Women’s Alliance

Gather your treasures, big and small, for the Women’s Alliance Rummage Sale!  Anything and everything, as long as it works and is CLEAN, will be welcome.  We will be collecting your “booty” the week of September 15th and the sale will be held on Friday, September 19th and Saturday, September 20th.  A big chunk of change most definitely will be welcomed, so lets all be generous supplying and buying.

Women’s Book Club

The Women’s Book Group will meet on the following dates:

Highlights of GA 2003

One of the most memorable events of the GA was a lecture by Rosemary Bray NcNatt, a former member of our Church.  A tape of her speech has been ordered and will be shared at some future date.

Julian Bond gave this year’s Ware Lecture.  A videotape of his outstanding lecture has been ordered and will also be shared in the near future

September First Friday

The date will be September 5th at 6:30 P.M.  Our food theme will be “Summer’s Not Over-Favorite Picnic Goodies”.  Reservations must be made by Wednesday, September 3rd by either calling the church office at 313-833-9107, calling Irene at 313-838-3348 or e-mailing Irene at the address on the front page of this Newsletter.  Because we base the amount of food we purchase on the number of reservations, if you make a reservation and can’t come, please let Irene know before 9 P.M. on the Thursday before, in this case, the 4th.  If I don’t here from you, we will have to charge you.  The cost for the dinner is $7.00 per person with children 10 years old and under $3.00.  As always, children under the age of 4 eat for free.  We don’t have an entertainment theme so please feel free to bring games (Trivial Pursuit, chess, checkers, cards, etc.) musical instruments or whatever suits your fancy.  Sand and ants may be provided.

METRO DETROIT'S LGBT CHORUS SEEKS SINGERS FOR NEW SEASON

ONE Voice is Metro Detroit's Chorus for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered community and their friends.  The chorus starts its 8th season on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 and all interested singers are invited to attend the first rehearsal, 7-9 PM at Affirmations Community Center at 195 W. 9-Mile Rd in Ferndale, MI.     Interested singers are welcomed to attend and should RSVP to Todd Ballou at (734) 480-4480 or onevoicetodd@aol.com.  Rehearsals will continue most Tuesdays though June. The chorus sings a diverse repertoire of music for mens' and womens' voices including Motown, spirituals, pop, Broadway, and LGBT-specific music. ONE Voice typically produces 2 concerts per year plus several community performances.

Also, I will be hosting several  OPEN FORUM events at various places. The first is at the Museum of African American History July 24th 2003 @ 5pm to 9pm --- OPEN FORUM in Pontiac at the Holiday Inn Select 1500 Opdyke, Auburn Hills July 28th 5pm.  Both of these events are forums for those affected or infected with HIV.  The other event is at the VA Medical Center Auditorium 4646 John R Detroit, MI. on August 27, 10am - 2pm Treatment update on HIV/AIDS with Dr. Isabello Reyes MD and Michelle Caffey, MSN, APRN.  I will also be the keynote speaker at the Traverse City AIDS Walk September 28, 2003.  For more information on any of the above, call Felix at 831-1365
