Building and Grounds

Thank you to Carolyn Ludwig for washing the kitchen cabinets at the Building & Grounds workday Saturday, November 11th. The next Building & Grounds Cleanup Day is Saturday, December 9th from 10 am-1 pm. Projects include gluing McCollester Hall floor tiles, painting ceiling tiles, and changing light bulbs. Please ask Earl Harvey or Dan Kosmowski for more information.

Please make a note that the building close time on Sunday's is now 3 pm. If an event is planned to go past 3 pm, the end time must be noted on the Church Calendar via the Office Administrator.

Membership

I have two Entertainment books for sale at $20 each. If later you decide to get one it will take 7-10 days to receive after the order is put in. The church makes $4 on the sale of each book. Some stores sell the book but it is $25.

I ordered two tickets to the Christmas Carole at the Bonstelle and saved $14 - two tickets for the price of one. We went to the Sierra Station Restaurant and saved $8. My niece got four hotel rooms in Ft. Lauderdale at a discount bigger than AAA or ARRP offers with the card. You will get your money back in no time if you use it.

I will not be here for Noel Night or the night before but if someone would like to sell Christmas things for your church group or for the church budget see Margaret Beck at coffee hour. Your help will be greatly appreciated. It is reusing and recycling and helping to save the earth. People are also getting fantastic bargains.

Margaret Beck.

Choir

Here's the UU Alphabet that the choir sang on November 12. A good time was had by all. By the way, the choir rehearses every Sunday morning at 9:30 am, except the 3rd Sunday of the month. All are welcome; experience is good, but not necessary. Hope to see you there! Gwen Foss, 248-473-4566, gwenfoss@netrek.net.

The UU Alphabet - tune of Jamaican Alphabet by Chris Cameron, lyrics by Gwen Foss, 1991 dedicated in solemn corniness to the Rev. Joan Kahn-Schneider

Joan, she ax me to sing a song
I sing it right though you think it wrong
It's all about sensuous UU’s
And some of the reasons they have been in the news

A for Abigail, a first lady
B for Bartok, who's from Hungary
C for Cher and her tasteful look
And D is for Darwin, took a trip, wrote a book

E for Emerson, a poet fine
F for Fannie who made sweets divine
G for Greeley, don't you ask me what
And H is for Helen Caldicott, pretty hot

I for Ingersoll, the atheist
J for Jefferson and independence
K is Kurt Vonnegut, who's weird at that
And L for Lincoln and his tall silk hat

M for Malvina, singing activist
N for Newton, first physicist
O for Owen D. Young, who's that?
And P is for Priestley, oxygen, where it's at

Q is Quimada in the Philippines
R is Rod Serling you see on teevee
S for Schweitzer, who worked in Gabon
And T is for Thoreau, yes, he lived on a pond

U is my letter, spell it with a U
V is Vaughan Williams, who wrote music, too
Double-U is just another way
To spell the theme of my song today

Double-U also for Wedgwood stuff
X for the cross, of which we've had enough
Y for Junior Whitney M. Young
And Z is for zowie, which you'll say when I'm done

Now I'm finish with my short, sweet song
I know you're dying to sing along
But don't be sad, now don't you start to mourn
Just remember, it isn't maize, only corn

O-o-o-oh, it's the UU Alphabet!

Upcoming Choir Fun

The First UU Choir welcomes and invites all interested musicians to share the joy of music making. No audition is required. The Choir generally rehearses on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sunday mornings 9:30 – 10:30 am. For more information please contact Gwen Foss, Choir Director at gwenfoss@netrek.net.

Congregational Meeting

Save the date Sunday, December 17, 2006, after church in McCollester Hall for an important Congregational Meeting to vote on the revision of our Church's Constitution and By-laws.

Copies of the proposed revised documents were available for pick-up at church on Nov.19. They are being emailed to everyone who has given us an email address and mailed first class to the rest of you.

Various revisions and changes were made in response to congregational meetings and written and verbal input collected on this topic. We did have a straw vote on the major changes recommended a few weeks ago and the majority of those present were in agreement with those changes.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call any member of the Constitution/By-laws Committee to discuss your concerns.

It is imperative that we have a quorum to vote on Sunday, December 17, 2006, so we can now move on with the other serious business of getting our church on a viable footing.

We spent a couple of weeks in California and a few days in Oklahoma before heading back to Detroit. Thank you to Dan Wiest for taking over the Newsletter in our absence, he did a great job. ~Irene

Wanted: Youths Who Like to Sing!

For a Youth Choir Performance

When: December 17th, 2006, the 3rd Sunday in December
Rehearsal and Performance all in one day.
Qualifications: Be a youth and like to sing
Todd Ballou, our illustrious Music Director, has graciously offered to try something new and direct a youth performance of a Christmas song during the last half of the service on December 17th. Youths who wish to participate will be asked to arrive 10:30 on the 17th (a half hour early). Todd will have a choice of several well-known Christmas songs available and he and the youths will pick a song, rehearse it from 10:30 to 11:30, then come down to the Sanctuary to perform the song for the Congregation. Please feel free to invite your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and any other youths who would enjoy singing to participate in this event. If enough youths are available to perform on December 24th, there may even be an encore presentation during Christmas Eve services.

Please notify Todd Ballou, Athena Kolbe (Interim DRE), or Margaret Wilkie (RE Chair) if you know of any youths who interested in participating. You can also email REat1stUU@aol.com.

November 18, 2006

Dear Friends at UU Church,
I am writing to thank you for your support and wonderful cooperation so that our Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit conference could manage to serve the organic lunches on Saturday and Sunday. I know that you gave us a 50% discount on the actual cost of the rental and other services connected with the use of the church. Freedom House, a not-for-profit organization assisted us as fiduciary, so all donations are tax deductible.
Please extend our gratitude to your entire congregation for their support and generous spirit and wish them a peace-filled Thanksgiving and holiday season.
Gratefully,
Gloria Rivera, IHM
GLBD Coordinator

Search Committee News

The Settled Minister Search Committee will be meeting with Heartland Interim District Representative, Rev. Lisa Presley, at the beginning of December to go over the next steps in the search process. The information packet will be finalized around that time, too. Then we’ll start exchanging packets with potential candidates. We appreciate the congregation’s support and look forward to the future.

Membership Committee

Some of you may have been wondering about the results of a survey we did a few Sundays ago. Here is a sampling of some of the responses given to the question – What do you want from this church? Many responses were similar or complementary.

We also now have a list of some of your interests and talents that we’ll share in upcoming Newsletters.

Women's Alliance

Please note the date change for the December Women’s Alliance. The luncheon and meeting will take place on the second Wednesday, December 13th at noon.

Interfaith Dialogue

Our December dialogue will take place on Sunday, December 17th at 2:00 P.M. All are welcome.

Noel Night December 2

Please join us on this festive occasion and while you’re enjoying the beautiful decorations and wonderful music, not to mention the vendors in McCollester Hall, and all the activities in the Sanctuary, spend a little time greeting people, monitoring the cider and cookies – hey – you could even bring some cookies, that would be a real treat. If you know some family-friendly holiday stories or would like to lead a sing-along in Memorial Hall, that would be splendid. There will be a decorate – the – church pizza party on December 1st in the evening. Check with Dan Wiest for the details on that and how you can help on Noel Night. If you have vendor questions Irene will be happy to come up with an answer for you.

NINETEEN THINGS THAT IT TOOK ME 50 YEARS TO LEARN
  1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
  2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings."
  3. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.
  4. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy.
  5. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.
  6. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)
  7. Your friends love you anyway.
