Anyone interested in playing cards (and board games) on a regular basis? We were thinking we would take turns at people's houses, maybe monthly. Many of us are rusty when it comes to card playing, so we'd have to brush up our skills. This is just for fun. If interested, call Ruth Seifert at 313.340.0671 or Sally Borden at 313.533.1494.
Please mark your calendars for these upcoming youth events (more details to follow). All events are open to adult church members/attenders unless otherwise indicated. For questions, directions, to RSVP, financial sponsorship, or if your young person needs a ride to an event, call Athena at the church or email re@1stuu.org. Youth should wear their red First UU T-shirts to all field trips. Please see Athena if your young person needs a T-shirt and doesn’t have one.
Belle Isle Athletic Field
Saturday August 25th, 10am - 2pm
Volunteers are needed to help staff an outreach table at the Back to School Fair. If you would like to help us reach out to more youth and families, please call Athena ASAP. You will need to meet prior to the event for a short orientation on our new school-year program prior to the Fair.
Tuesday August 28th, 10am - 3pm
Meet at church at 10am and bring a lunch plus $5.00 for admission.
Saturday September 1st, 8am - 11pm
Meet at Athena’s house at 8am to carpool. Bring a bathing suit or change of clothes, towel, water bottle, camera, a lunch that doesn’t need to be kept cold, snacks and spending money for dinner. For more information, please email me at re@1stuu.org. A responsible person who is at least sixteen years old must accompany children under the age of nine.
Saturday September 8th
Youth and adult volunteers are needed to staff the First UU table at the Dally in the Alley. This would include talking to people about our program, the church and Unitarian-Universalism and/or doing face painting (our free service to draw people in.)
Saturday September 22, 9am - 6pm
Meet at Athena’s house at 9am to carpool. Wear comfortable shoes and bring lunch, a camera and water bottle. Renaissance period dress is encouraged but not required.
Sunday September 30
Carpool from church after coffee hour.
September is almost here! It’s time for the Rummage Sale at 1st UU.
Why have a Rummage Sale?
Mark your calendars for September 9 to September 15.
Sunday, September 9: After church, drop off your donated items.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday: Setting up and organizing. 10am -- 3pm in Pullman
Hall.
Thursday: Sale Opens—Noon to 7:00 pm.
Friday: Sale Day--Noon to 7:00 pm.
Saturday: Sale Day--10:00am to 2:00 pm. Clean up begins at 2:00.
We will need extra assistance on Saturday afternoon for packing leftover items from the sale in preparation for pick-up by a local charity. For more information see Alma King or Helen True.
The Worship Committee is interested in any feedback or suggestions you may have regarding our worship services. The members are Lencha Acker, Marylou Malone, Dan Secrest, and Len Zettel along with staff members Drew Johnston, Todd Ballou, Gwen Foss, and Athena Kolbe.
Margaret Mellen, wife of John Mellen – former First UU church member, died July 31st. Margaret had retired from teaching in July after 55 years of teaching.
Entertainment Books are for sale during coffee hour. The cost is $20.00 per book with our church earning $4.00 for each book sold. We also get two free books to sell. If over fifty books are sold, $10.00 is earned from each book. There are fantastic values in the books. I have saved money at restaurants, plays, dog grooming, hotels, etc. See Margaret during coffee hour for more information.
Jon and I will be going to Salina, KS for his Navy ship reunion - hey, isn't Kansas landlocked? - at any rate, we will be gone from September 11th (uh-oh) - 26th so Dan Wiest has generously offered to do the September 16th Newsletter. Please submit any articles to him and not to me for that issue. From Kansas we will head to Jet, OK to visit friends then on to Las Cruces to hang out with Jan, Cindy and Hillard.
The First UU Book Discussion Group will be meeting on the second Sunday of September. The book for discussion is Have a Little Faith: A Collection of Stories by various authors. We will resume having our meetings on the first Sundays in October.
Thanks to all who helped with and participated in the Summer Potluck, the
Gleaners Food Drive and the Hands Along Woodward event. We collected items
that will aid others in need. After the First Annual Summer Picnic Potluck,
about 25 of us took our handholding expertise to a new level out into the
world by lining up on Woodward between Warren and Hancock at 2pm. There was
a great feeling of camaraderie as the rain let up for a while. Although we
were small in numbers, we were mighty in spirit. We shared the block with
people from several other area churches. No church bells rang as advertised,
but there were honking horns and friendly waves from passerby. We concluded
with some of us singing We Shall Overcome.

What is a Street Retreat?
Essentially, it is walking outside with a deep awareness of your environment
(both people and place) while reflecting on what you are experiencing inside.
I will be doing a Street Retreat October 11 - 14 in Midtown Detroit (aka The
Cass Corridor). The retreat will be led by Sensei Grover Gauntt, dharma successor
of Bernie Glassman. Joining me will be a student from the Ecumenical Theological
Seminary, my husband, Stuart, and several others. If you would like to join
us (I know it's a big commitment), please call me at 313-617-4615. Why are
we doing this? We believe that the homeless problem can be solved. To learn
more about bearing witness to homelessness, read Bearing Witness
by Bernie Glassman.
In power and faith, Lynda
