Drew’s News

“Welcome, I’m glad you are here.” I have heard these, and similar, words since I first arrived in Detroit. At first I was, ”Thank you, I can’t believe you are here.” That came from a shuttle bus driver who was amazed that no one sent me here, but that I chose to come. What the driver didn’t know was that I had a strong pull to come to serve First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit and that I also had a strong suspicion that there was a mystery to solve here. The solution to the mystery turned out to be simple – there is a bunch of delightful people here already!

What the shuttle driver and others may neglect to consider is that the value in being somewhere is in the relationships that exist to be discovered and nurtured, as well as the new relationships to build. It starts with the simple acknowledgement, “I’m glad you are here.”

And I am, indeed, glad that you are here, glad that I am here, and glad for the people who are about to arrive here. Every day that we come to church we may have the chance to greet a stranger, to connect with someone we don’t really know, or to deepen a connection we already have. I write today to ask two things – when you arrive at church know this – someone is glad you are here. And when you see a newcomer, let them know that you are glad for their presence.

We are going to have a great year together! See you in church –
Reverend Drew

Joy Johnson, a friend of Margaret Beck and 1st. U.U. Church, gave a cash donation in memory of Juneteenth Day. Juneteenth was a very important day for Joy, because it is the date of her wedding anniversary. Juneteenth is always celebrated at 1st. Church with a service about how the Emancipation Proclamation affected African American slaves in the U.S. Thanks to Joy for honoring this special day that marks an important mile stone in her life and also in the history of the U.S.

First UU will open its doors to the neighborhood and nether regions for Noel Nite on Saturday, December 1. Help us put our best foot forward by attending a planning meeting in Memorial Hall on Sunday, September 23 at 12:30.

Seven people from First UU marched with a coalition of: several people from area UU churches; the UU Social Justice Network, MichUhcan, Detroit Symphony Members and the American Federation of Musicians, Grey Panthers, and others. We marched in the annual Labor Day Parade from Warren and Woodward to Downtown. We marched for Universal Health Care. Ahead of us, and with us, were politicians John Conyers, Carl and Sander Levin, Aldo Vagnozzi- State Rep for Farmington Hills and others. There were many Union locals and quite a few spectators. It was sunny and a good day for a parade.
